The Beaches of Cancun

Cancun can be split into two parts, the downtown area with small hotels and shops and the famous Hotel Zone on a 14 kilometer peninsula jutting into the Caribbean Sea. ‘Air-conditioned’ Sand

The beaches are popular not only for their turquoise waters, but the lightweight and cool sand, cool even under the blazing sun. This is because the sand is composed of microscopic plankton fossils called disco-aster, instead of silica. Cancun’s creative promoters have called it ‘air-conditioned’.

Beaches on the North side

The beaches on the northern side of the 14 mile Hotel Zone are on the tip of the Mujeres Bay. Some of the most popular beaches include:

1. Playa Caracol and Playa Cancun: These two beaches are next to each other. They are ideal for beginner swimmers or children due to its shallow flat sand bed. Entrance is however is a bit difficult to locate and you will have to go through the small wood gate next to Fiesta Americana Coral Beach or through the Xcaret bus terminal. Playa Caracol is one of the most popular and crowded beaches in the strip with multiple restaurants, bars, nightclubs and water sports vendors.

2. Playa Linda: This beach offers excellent swimming, with locals and tourists considering it the best swimming in all of Cancun. It contains a ring of restaurants as well as changing rooms on the beach. This beach is the main departure point for dive and submarine tours and the place to catch the shuttle to Isla Mujeres.

3. Playa Langosta: With a name meaning ‘Lobster Beach’, Playa Langosta is a cove beach, making is different from most of the beaches in Cancun. This beach also offers excellent swimming and is situated right in the middle of the north end, facing Bahia de Mujres.

Beaches on the East side

The beaches on the east side border the Caribbean Sea and are home to higher waves and windier conditions than the beaches on the north. Some of the popular beaches include:

1. Playa Ballenas: This beach provides breathtaking views and peaceful sunbathing. For the more adventurous ones, parasailing, tube rides and sand volleyball is also available. Currents can however get quite high on this beach at any point of the year so it is best to keep an eye out for warning flags. The public entrance can be found on the sidewalk along the Meridian hotel wall fence.

2. Playa Delfines: The beach is a peaceful place to relax and contemplate with its serene views and stone benches. Swimming conditions can however be dangerous due to harsh currents and strong surf.

3. San Miguelito: This is an unusual beach, containing small Mayan ruins and mixing history with activity.

It doesn’t matter which beach you choose, whether the calmer bayside ones or the windier seaside ones, all provide bright turquoise water, great views and relaxing sunbathing.
