7 Must-See Quirky Attractions in Portland

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 04:38 PM PDT

We've recently come back from a mini road trip to Portland and wanted to share some quirky attractions we've come across while in Portland. Portland is often known as a quirky and sometimes weird city, with signs and bumper stickers seen throughout the town that say "Keep Portland Weird." Of course our list would then contain must-see attractions that meet an eccentric and offbeat criteria. If you are visiting Portland for the first time, you'll want to keep this list handy. The best thing about this list is that it's catered to any type of tourist. Whether you are a hipster, a history buff, a nudist or a foodie, you'll find something on this list that will catch your eye – we promise!

With a number of unusual places that support the "quirky" image of the city, we like to present you with our top 7 quirky attractions to see and do in and around Portland:

Voodoo Doughnut
The epitome of weird and quirky – Voodoo donuts offers a variety of donut selections like no other. This eclectic donut shop offers flavours that will rock your taste buds, including maple bacon donuts, fruitloop donuts and grape ape donuts. With a slogan that says "The Magic Is in the Hole," you simply cannot forget to visit this well-loved establishment. Make sure you stop by with an appetite, as you'll likely have the urge to try each donut!

Keep Portland WeirdAs we mentioned above, there are signs and bumper stickers around town with this city's "slogan" that may catch your eye. However, if you want more than just a glimpse, we suggest visiting the original sign. Right across from Voodoo Donuts, this sign makes the perfect photo-op! Make sure this attraction is at the top of your list, as you won't be able to see Portland at its weirdest without visiting this attraction.

Portland's Annual World Naked Bike RideIf you crave extremely quirky things to do, then this is for you! If you happen to be in Portland in June, keep an eye out for Portland's Annual World Naked Bike Ride. Whether you are a participant or not, you'll surely enjoy the atmosphere. The Bike Ride has been an annual event since 2005, and each year gains additional participants from all over the world.

Moberi Just outside Portland, this bike powered smoothie bar will leave you amazed. Where else will you find a place that can make smoothies with their bike? It's completely out-of-the-box and unique, a typical Portland attraction. Not only is their entire concept offbeat, their menu will have you laughing due to its overall quirkiness. We couldn't help but laugh at their "Affordable Healthcare" smoothie – sounds delicious!

Zombie Survival Basics ProgramThey say the zombie apocalypse will occur in the near future, so why not be prepared? Zombies have been a popular trend this past year, so it shouldn't come to a surprise that a survival program against zombies exists in Portland. This program is quite intensive, with 7 hours of wilderness and urban survival training. It may be extremely useful one day!

WWII Bomber RestaurantA themed restaurant like no other, this aviation inspired restaurant will have you grinning from ear to ear. We recommend visiting for breakfast, as they say breakfast is the most important part of your day, so why not start with a plentiful meal! This establishment can't be ignored, especially since a vintage World War II B-17 Bomber sits right in the parking lot. Now a landmark in Oregon, this restaurant has become a classic place to dine for American comfort food.

Powell Books It may sound weird to hear Portland has a famous bookstore chain. In this digital day in age, it's rare to see bookstores even survive, but Powell Books stays strong. Of course, in Portland nature, this bookstore is not like any other bookstore – it has a very vintage and unique vibe to it. It is also one of the largest bookstores around – some have said they need a map just to find their way around the store. If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the metropolitan area, this bookstore will be your haven.
